Korean Language and Culture
Spring 2015
Guidelines for
Essay 1 (Due Feb. 14, Tue)
- You will choose a topic
among the ones that will have been covered in class by Week 4, and write a
3-5 pages double-spaced typewritten essay. The possbile topics are:
- General issues on
the relation between language and culture/society
- Writing system: its
linguistic and cultural impacts and implications
- Practices and attitudes
about loan words or foreign elements in your language
- Color terms and their cultural implications
- Kinship terms
- Submit both a hard
copy (in class) and an electronic file (saved as MSWord document
and sent through e-mail via attachment).
- The essay should present
your own crtical thinking and analysis rather than a report from other people's
writing or a summary of the lecture material.
- Keep in mind that you
address issues from the two perspectives, a universal or cross-cultural perspective
and a culture-specific perspective.
- Support your ideas/discussion
with specific examples of language use/practices.
- Use whatever sources
and resources you can get. Make sure you cite your sources properly.
- The essay shoud address
the following:
- General issues you
are going to deal with
- Previous analyses
or general assumptions made about the issues you are dealing with
- Specify specifically
what phenomena you will be looking at.
- Present your critical
thinking or analysis, with specific examples of language use or practices
in the language and culture you are dealing with.
- If your subject language is not Korean, compare your language with Korean.
- Cultural and/or social
implications of your finding/analysis
